Win 2026! If you're planning a new website to create a better/clearer identity or get more leads/inquiries, start by downloading "Pre-study website checklist". Good luck - and let's keep your competitors guessing! 😄

When should you think mobile first?

Today, many companies have their main target audience on mobile. But does it apply to everyone? When should you design primarily for mobile phones, or primarily for desktop? Is it outdated to design for desktop - should you skip it altogether?

It's quite easy to gather statistics on how your website is used. Many use Google Analytics or similar tools (You can also see this directly in Easyweb), and can quickly get an overview of how the website is used today. The truth is that an increasingly large portion of visitors in most industries surf mobile - but of course, this varies greatly from industry to industry.

If your business is B2B, your main target audience is probably sitting in front of a larger screen during working hours, and visits your website that way, 9-5.

If you work with fast-moving consumer products or services, your website is most likely used primarily during leisure time - often via mobile devices.

Generally, the younger your target audience is, the larger the share of visitors will come to you via mobile.

Of course, it's important to get to know your own unique target audience - before starting to generalize too much.

So back to the statistics then. How does it look?

We collect data and statistics for all of our clients, and continuously go through what we discover to see how the website's content and structure can be optimized to increase conversion and user-friendliness.

Here are some sharp examples from our clients that we have observed:

  • Large IT company, approx. 100 visitors per day, significantly less on weekends - approx. 80% desktop and 15% mobile.
  • Large restaurant chain, approx. 1,500 visitors per day, more towards the weekends, approx. 40% desktop and 55% mobile.
  • Niche products for "horse girls", approx. 100 visitors per day, more towards the weekends, approx. 20% desktop and 75% mobile.

(The missing percentages are "other", e.g. iPads, bots/other, etc - if you were wondering 🤗

Magic formula - the younger the target audience, the more fast-moving products - the more mobile!

Then create a website that is best for your primary target audience, but also stable and awesome for your secondary one. Mobile should work great - just like desktop. (Read about responsive web design here). But when you start sketching a design layout, when you start thinking about the flows that will lead to your goal - your conversion - your "sale"; then think - mobile first! .. or desktop first! Whatever works best for you!
